This sustainably and responsibly grown micro-lot AA coffee is produced by the 1,500 small-holder farmers of the Kaukiswa wet mill under the Kambusu co-operative in Machakos County, Kenya. Boasting a Fair-trade and C.A.F.E certification, Kaukiswa's processes about 700,000 kilos of red ripe cherries using fresh water from the Kaukiswa river. If that was not all, this well maintained factory has beehives from which it collects organic honey for sell. This flavor-complex coffee is grown on about 350 hectares of small fragmented plots that lie between the Kanzalu hills and the Ol Donyo Sabuk mountain. Members are trained to grow macadamia, avocado and banana trees to shade coffee trees from the blazing sun and conserve soil moisture, but also as an alternative source of income. Machakos is committed to supporting its coffee farmers. In 2013, the county installed a dry mill, the Lower Eastern Coffee Millers that has lowered member transport costs and improved coffee quality. For years, Machakos farmers transported their parchment coffee to millers in Kiambu and Nairobi counties.
